Project Overview

Set above Salcombe Bay, this contemporary coastal new-build required a microcement installation capable of unifying complex external and internal architectural elements while performing in an exposed marine environment.

The project focused on a bespoke external entertaining space, incorporating a sunken lounge, firepit, and bar area, alongside internal applications to staircases and feature walls. A continuous material approach was required to reinforce spatial flow and maintain consistency across both interior and exterior zones.

Ideal Work Micro Topping was specified to deliver a refined concrete aesthetic across intricate forms without increasing structural build-up, while providing durability suitable for coastal condition

The Brief

The brief required a seamless microcement solution across both external and internal architectural features.

Key requirements included:

  • External microcement installation to a sunken lounge, firepit, and bar area

  • Continuous surfaces across integrated seating and stepped levels

  • A finish aligned with the coastal architectural palette

  • High durability suitable for exposed marine conditions

  • Internal continuation across staircase, landing, and feature wall

  • Precise detailing across junctions, curves, and level transitions

Consistency of finish across varied surfaces and environments was critical to the overall design intent.

The Solution

We installed Ideal Work Micro Topping in a Tortora finish across the external entertaining space and selected internal elements.

The system was applied to create a continuous, monolithic surface across the sunken lounge, integrated seating, and bar area, maintaining visual consistency across complex geometries.

Internally, the same finish was extended to the staircase, landing, and feature wall, reinforcing a cohesive material language throughout the property.

The Tortora tone was selected to complement the surrounding coastal landscape and architectural palette, providing a balanced, neutral finish across all surfaces.

The combination of external exposure and complex geometry required detailed preparation and execution.

Key considerations included:

  • Extensive substrate preparation to meet tolerance and adhesion requirements

  • Managing application across curved surfaces, junctions, and level changes

  • Ensuring continuity across integrated seating and stepped formations

  • Detailing and sealing appropriate for exposed coastal conditions

  • Maintaining consistency of tone and texture across internal and external applications

Each stage was carefully sequenced to ensure long-term performance and visual uniformity.

Technical Considerations

Each stage was carefully planned and executed to ensure the final surface met both the aesthetic vision and the practical demands of the home.

The Result

The completed installation establishes a continuous architectural surface across both external and internal spaces, reinforcing the clean geometry of the design.

Externally, the microcement defines functional zones within the entertaining area while withstanding the demands of a coastal environment. Internally, the continuation of the finish strengthens material consistency and spatial cohesion.

The project demonstrates the application of microcement as a unifying architectural material, capable of delivering both aesthetic clarity and durable performance across complex residential schemes.
