PROJECT

Self-build Eco Home

Polished concrete (1).jpg

Project Overview

Choice Concrete were commissioned to deliver a bespoke polished concrete installation for this contemporary eco home in Eype. The project comprised 160 m² of polished concrete executed as a single continuous pour spanning both floor levels, incorporating a 6 m feature wall and 6 m of steps — all stripped, rendered and polished as one monolithic surface.

The installation demanded detailed sequencing and precision finishing to achieve complete continuity across vertical and horizontal planes. Finished in a bespoke Flint tone, the concrete enhances the home’s architectural geometry while reflecting natural light throughout the openplan interior.

The result is a technically refined, hard-wearing and low-maintenance surface that reinforces the building’s sustainable ethos while serving as a defining architectural element.

The Brief

The brief called for a continuous polished concrete surface spanning two floor levels, incorporating a 6 metre feature wall and 6 metres of integrated steps. The architect required:

  • Complete material continuity across horizontal and vertical planes.

  • A bespoke finish aligned with the minimalist interior palette.

  • High durability with low long-term maintenance.

  • A surface that enhanced natural light within open-plan spaces Precision and sequencing were critical to achieve a seamless result.

The Solution

We installed 160 m² of polished concrete as a single coordinated pour across both levels. The installation incorporated the 6 metre wall and step formation, all stripped, rendered and polished to create a unified surface.

A bespoke Flint tone was specified to complement the architectural finishes and provide subtle depth without overpowering the interior

Delivering a continuous surface across floor planes, vertical walls and steps required careful planning and execution.

Key technical elements included:

  • Sequencing the pour to maintain monolithic continuity.

  • Vertical surface preparation and polishing methodology.

  • Control of curing conditions to ensure colour consistency.

  • Detailed edge forming to maintain sharp architectural lines

Level tolerances were closely managed to ensure alignment between floors, steps and adjoining materials.

Technical Considerations

Each stage was carefully planned and executed to ensure the final surface met both the aesthetic vision and the practical demands of the home.

The Result

The finished installation creates a cohesive material language throughout the home. The polished concrete enhances light reflectivity and reinforces the architectural geometry, while providing a highly durable surface suitable for long-term residential use.

The floor, wall and steps read as a single architectural element, strengthening the contemporary identity of the home.
