Project Overview

Delivered as part of a memorial installation within the Poundbury Estate, this project involved the construction of a bespoke exposed aggregate feature forming an eight-sided star within a landscaped public setting.

The installation required a high level of geometric precision to achieve the defined star form, while the material specification needed to align with the traditional Dorset palette used throughout the estate.

The surface was designed to provide both visual distinction and long-term durability suitable for a public-facing environment.

The Brief

The brief required a precisely executed exposed aggregate feature integrated within a formal memorial setting.

Key requirements included:

  • Construction of an eight-sided star feature with accurate geometry

  • Use of materials aligned with the Poundbury architectural palette

  • A durable, slip-resistant surface suitable for public use

  • Consistent exposed aggregate finish across the full feature

  • High-quality detailing to reflect the significance of the memorial

Accuracy in setting out and finish consistency were critical to the success of the installation.

The Solution

We installed an exposed aggregate concrete feature using a Stone Buff integral colour mix, seeded with 10 mm locally sourced Dorset flint.

The selected materials were chosen to reflect the natural tones of the surrounding architecture, ensuring the feature integrated within the wider estate.

Precise formwork and setting out were used to establish the eight-sided geometry, with careful control during placement and finishing to maintain clean edges and consistent proportions throughout the star.

The surface was then processed to expose the flint aggregate, creating a textured, durable finish.

The geometric nature of the design required a high level of accuracy throughout the installation.

Key considerations included:

  • Precise setting out to achieve symmetrical eight-sided geometry

  • Formwork detailing to maintain sharp, consistent edges

  • Controlled placement to avoid distortion of the defined shape

  • Uniform exposure of 10 mm flint aggregate across the full surface

  • Managing finish consistency within a feature-led installation

  • Surface preparation and finishing suitable for public foot traffic

Each stage required careful coordination to ensure both accuracy and finish quality.

Technical Considerations

Each stage was carefully planned and executed to ensure the final surface met both the aesthetic vision and the practical demands of the home.

The Result

The completed installation provides a clearly defined architectural feature within the landscape, combining geometric precision with a material finish that reflects the surrounding estate.

The exposed flint aggregate delivers both durability and texture, ensuring the surface performs effectively under public use while maintaining visual clarity.

The project demonstrates the delivery of detailed concrete features within formal public settings, where accuracy, material selection, and finish consistency are critical to the final outcome.
