Project Overview

Delivered as part of the Bath Quays North regeneration, this riverside public realm scheme required a durable external paving solution capable of supporting continuous pedestrian use within a sensitive historic setting.

The project involved the installation of 430 m² of exposed aggregate concrete walkways along the River Avon, forming a key part of the public-facing landscape. The finish needed to integrate with the surrounding civic architecture while providing long-term performance under high footfall conditions.

A seeded exposed aggregate system was specified to deliver both structural durability and a natural, stone-led appearance aligned with the wider public realm design.

The Brief

The brief required a robust external paving solution suited to a live public environment and environmentally sensitive location.

Key requirements included:

  • 430 m² of exposed aggregate paving for pedestrian walkways

  • A finish aligned with Bath’s historic and civic context

  • High durability under continuous public use

  • Slip-resistant surface suitable for external conditions

  • Installation within a live, fully accessible public site

  • Strict environmental controls due to proximity to the River Avon

Maintaining public access and safety throughout the works was a critical requirement.

The Solution

We delivered a seeded exposed aggregate installation using a Pebble Stone integral colour mix, creating a consistent, stone-rich surface across the full walkway area.

The system was selected for its ability to provide a durable structural surface while exposing natural aggregates to achieve a textured, visually integrated finish.

Works were carefully phased to maintain continuous pedestrian access, with installation sequences coordinated to minimise disruption while ensuring consistency across the full 430 m².

The combination of a live public site and riverside location required strict control throughout the installation.

Key considerations included:

  • Phased installation to maintain safe pedestrian routes at all times

  • Managing consistency of exposed aggregate finish across large surface areas

  • Controlled washout processes to achieve uniform aggregate exposure

  • Implementation of environmental protection measures to prevent river contamination

  • Material handling and site management within a constrained urban setting

  • Coordination with site teams to align with wider regeneration works

All works were executed with a focus on maintaining both safety and finish quality.

Technical Considerations

Each stage was carefully planned and executed to ensure the final surface met both the aesthetic vision and the practical demands of the home.

The Result

The completed installation delivers a durable, slip-resistant surface designed to withstand long-term public use while maintaining a consistent and integrated appearance within the wider scheme.

The exposed aggregate finish provides natural texture and visual depth, reinforcing the relationship between the built environment and riverside setting.

The project demonstrates the delivery of large-scale concrete paving within complex public realm conditions, combining environmental control, logistical coordination, and consistent installation standards.
